Vermont House
The Brief
This family is planning to downscale and retire in beautiful Vermont.
With a big family and extended family coming to visit with a wide age group this house had to adapt to suit a travelling retired couple but also a big family get together and grandparent home.
The Design
The fantastic site almost beach front forced the design to open up to the South with big balconies for late afternoon sundowners, while north access to the site allowed for beautiful mountain views and private gardens.
To accommodate the families versatile needs, the house was designed over 3 levels. The top floor is the main living space and main bedroom. This is where the owners (grandparents) will live. The middle floor and entrance level from the north hosts the garages and the "apartment" with central laundry.
The lower level hosts the grandchildren space. Access to the southern garden, cinema room and games room. All floors are linked by elevator to address the vertical movement in the house and retirement needs that might occur in the future. All floors can be separated and locked down if not in use or to allow privacy to the permanent inhabitants on the top floor.
