Bizweni - Somerset West Home
The Brief
This was a personal design. It was the first home of Herman and Annemari. With their love for colour, vintage furniture and contemporary architecture, this was a challenge. Also it had to accommodate their beloved basset hounds.
The Design
This was a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house, with double garage and bachelor's apartment. The house was designed with a 300 mm concrete roof, sloping in two directions, and a concrete wall to the southeastern side. This created a stoep space that allowed for occupancy even with the Cape's southeaster blowing, as the wind was pushed over the house's roof.
The thermal properties of the thick concrete also kept the house cool in summer. Large shop front windows brought in ample natural light, with sliding doors opening up the inside to the outside. As the site sloped significantly the house was designed to step with the slope. A neutral interior was created for the busy and colourful furniture and art, with the exterior showing off the couple's love for colour.
